Charge Renormalization, Thermodynamics, and Structure of Deionized Colloidal Suspensions

چکیده
In charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, highly chargedmacroions, dressed by strongly correlated counterions, carry an effective charge that can be substantially reduced (renormalized) from the bare charge. Interactions between dressedmacroions are screened by weakly correlated counterions and salt ions. Thermodynamic and structural properties of colloidal suspensions depend sensitively on the magnitudes of both the effective charge and the effective screening constant. Combining a charge renormalization theory of effective electrostatic interactions with Monte Carlo simulations of a one-component model, we compute osmotic pressures and pair distribution functions of deionized colloidal suspensions. This computationally practical approach yields close agreement with corresponding results from large-scale simulations of the primitive model up to modest electrostatic coupling strengths. Colloidal charge renormalization in suspensions containing multivalent electrolyte.
A theory is proposed which allows us to self-consistently calculate the effective colloidal charge and the counterion and coion density profiles in suspensions containing both multivalent and monovalent electrolytes. The formation of counterion-coion clusters is explicitly taken into account. The theory predicts that sufficiently strongly charged colloidal particles will become overcharged. The...
متن کاملElectrostatic correlations: from Plasma to Biology
Electrostatic correlations play an important role in physics, chemistry and biology. In plasmas they result in thermodynamic instability similar to the liquid-gas phase transition of simple molecular fluids. For charged colloidal suspensions the electrostatic correlations are responsible for screening and colloidal charge renormalization. In aqueous solutions containing multivalent counterions ...
متن کاملElectrostatic interactions of colloidal particles at vanishing ionic strength.
Electrostatic interactions of colloidal particles are typically screened by mobile ions in the solvent. We measure the forces between isolated pairs of colloidal polymer microspheres as the density of bulk ions vanishes. The ionic strength is controlled by varying the concentration of surfactant (NaAOT) in a nonpolar solvent (hexadecane). While interactions are well-described by the familiar sc...
متن کاملA self-consistent renormalized jellium approach for calculating structural and thermodynamic properties of charge stabilized colloidal suspensions.
An approach is proposed which allows to self-consistently calculate the structural and the thermodynamic properties of highly charged aqueous colloidal suspensions. The method is based on the renormalized jellium model with the background charge distribution related to the colloid-colloid correlation function. The theory is used to calculate the correlation functions and the effective colloidal...
متن کاملEffective Interactions and Volume Energies in Charge-Stabilized Colloidal Suspensions
Charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions can be conveniently described by formally reducing the macroion-microion mixture to an equivalent one-component system of pseudo-particles. Within this scheme, the utility of a linear response approximation for deriving effective interparticle interactions has been demonstrated [M. J. Grimson and M. Silbert, Mol. Phys. 74, 397 (1991)]. Here the response a...
